Balancing group management is a fundamental process for the commercial administration of gas volumes in the German gas market. A balancing group consolidates all entry points and exit points of a balancing group manager (BKV) within a market area. The primary objective of balancing group management is to ensure the equilibrium between the gas volumes injected into and withdrawn from a balancing group, thereby maintaining the stability of the gas network and providing the basis for both energy and financial settlement. Efficient balancing group management is essential for a liquid and transparent gas market.

Network operators (NB) are at the core of the data flow driving balancing group management. Key activities performed by network operators include:

  • Recording hourly gas volumes at critical metering points
  • Transmitting aggregated data by balancing groups and time series types to the market area manager (MGV)
  • Ensuring data quality and consistency within a complex information network
  • Improving accuracy between reported and actually allocated volumes by actively participating in allocation clearing processes
